MASIK DURGASHTAMI, 16 NOVEMBER 2018
Masik Durgashtami or Masik Durga Ashtami is a holy sacred Hindu monthly event. Masik means monthly. Durga refers to the deity Goddess Durga. Asthami means the 8th day, Tithi, of the Hindu lunar calendar. The Sanskrit word ‘Ashta’ means 8 and ‘Asthami’ means eighth. Masik Durgashtami is observed on the 8th day of the Shukla Paksha of the moon’s monthly fortnight. Shukla Paksha is the waxing-rising phase of the moon in the fortnight. Masik Durgashtami is observed in dedication and devotion to Goddess Durga.
Masik Durgashtami is also referred to as the Shukla Paksha Ashtami.
Deity Goddess Maa Durga is the Goddess of Victory, especially victory of the good over the evil. Goddess Durga is believed to be created by Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu, the top three Hindu deities. Goddess Durga is also known by other names, such as Goddess Shakti, Goddess Devi.
On the occasion of Masik Durgashtami, many devotees observe a day long, morning to evening, Vrat, fast in worship to Goddess Mother Durga. They perform Puja, prayers. Many shower flower petals on the Goddess Durga idols or images. Some light Diya, oil lamp with incense, pleasant fragrance stick. Many visit Goddess Durga temples.
There are thousands of Goddess Durga and related temples from the Himalayas to south India. Some of the famous ones are Vaishno Devi Temple, Kalka Devi Temple, Varanasi Durga Temple, Chamunda Devi Temple, Mansi Devi Temple, Kamakhya Temple, AmbaJi Mata Temple, Dakshineswar Kali Mandir, Naina Devi Temple, Maa Jwala Ji Temple, Karni Mata Temple, Chamundeshwari Temple, Kanaka Durga Temple, Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple, Goddess Bhagvathi Temple etc.
Natives worship and seek blessings of the Goddess to kill the evil, end any sufferings and problems, to get rid of bad Karma, pray for forgiveness for any bad doings, protection from effects of any malefic planets or forces etc. Goddess Durga is worshiped in India, Nepal, parts of Bangladesh, Indonesia etc. Many prepare traditional vegetarian Indian food, and sweets like Kheer, Halwa etc.

Sarva-Mangala-Mangalye Shive Sarvaartha Saadhike
Sharaannye Trya Ambike Gauri Naaraayanni Namoastu Te
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥
