What is Akshaya Tritiya?
Akshaya Tritiya is a popular auspicious annual Hindu event. Akshaya Tritiya also has religious significance as it is linked to Lord Vishnu, one of the top three deities. Many also mark Akshaya Tritiya as the birthday of the 6th avatar of Lord Vishnu, Lord Parashurama, called Parashurama Jayanti. Lord Ganesha is also remembered on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. It is believed that Lord Ganesha starting writing the great Indian Hindu epic Mahabharata at this time.

The Sanskrit word Akshaya means never-ending, imperishable, eternal, limitless or unlimited. Tritiya means the third lunar-moon day of the two monthly moon phases, Paksha, that come in the month, on a fortnightly basis. Though it is a Hindu holy event, specific Hindu communities observe and revere it more devotedly, especially by the business communities and job or career-oriented natives, Jains etc; Akshaya Tritiya also has astrological importance and value. Akshaya Tritiya is also considered auspicious for remembrance and tribute to the ancestors, forefathers, and their peace.
When is Akshaya Tritiya observed?
The date of the Akshaya Tritiya may vary in every Gregorian year and always falls in the corresponding April end or May period. The date of Akshaya Tritiya is determined as per the Hindu calendar. Akshaya Tritiya, each year, falls on the 3rd lunar-moon day, the Tithi called Tritiya, in the Shukla Paksha, in the Hindu calendar month of Vaishakha. Shukla Paksha is the waxing-rising phase of the moon in the month’s fortnight. In 2019, Akshaya Tritiya is falling on the 7th of April, on Tuesday.
