Ranga Panchami is a joyous holy Spring event which always falls five days after the main mega Spring festival of Holi every year. Rang or Ranga means color. The Sanskrit number Pancha means five. Panchama means 5th. Panchami is the 5th day, Tithi. In the case of Ranga Panchami, Panchami relates to the 5th day of the moon in the fortnight moon phase in a Hindu calendar; therefore, Ranga Panchami is celebrated on the 5th day of the decreasing-waning phase of the moon, Krishna Paksha, in the Hindi calendar month of Phalguna.
The purpose of the event of Ranga Panchami is to mark the purity in the air after the fire of Holika Dahan. Ranga Panchami marks the victory over Rajasi and Tamasic, also called Raja Tama particles in the air. Rajas relates to passion and action, and Tamas related to darkness. Ranga Panchami also signifies spiritual advancement. It is said to kill any negativity in the air, and enables purity. In this condition, natives call upon deities and celebrate Ranga Panchami five days after Holi. The five also represent the 5 main life elements, wind, water, light, Earth, and sky, that make up the universe and the human body, also called Panch Tatva.
The celebration of Ranga Panchami involves playing with colors, gulal, fragrant colored powder; applying and throwing of colors joyously on each other and the surrounding areas. Many natives worship and pray to Lord Krishna, also as they mark it in the unity of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. In some parts of India, the Holi festival is extendedly celebrated up to Ranga Panchami.
Ranga Panchami is celebrated in some parts of India, primarily in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh etc, and also Delhi NCR etc. A big event is organized in Vrindavan and Mathura which is a holy birthplace of Lord Krishna, called Krishna janmabhoomi. Prayers, Pujas are held.
We wish all natives with a warm celebration of Ranga Panchami.
