Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Dr. BR Ambedkar, and Babasaheb Ambedkar, is called the Architect of the Constitution of India and was a prominent Indian leader. Dr. Ambedkar was the Chairman of the drafting committee of the Constitution of India. Dr. Ambedkar lived from 1891 to 1956, i.e., for 65 years.
The celebration of Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti each year marks his birthday. Dr. Ambedkar was born on the 14th of April 1891, in Mhow, in the Indore district, Madhya Pradesh. The city is also now known as Dr. Ambedkar Nagar. The 14th of April marks Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. Jayanti means the anniversary or birth celebration.
The Constitution of India is the exhaustive text-document on the governing law of India. The Constitution of India is the record largest written constitution in the world ever. The Constitution of India came into effect on the 26th of January 1950. The 26th of January is marked as Republic Day of India, in celebration of the Constitution.
The Constitution of India reflects the rules and regulations, equal rights for all its citizens irrespective of socio-economic status, culture, religion, caste, equality for all, liberty, political democracy, citizens’ power of voting-electing, equal justice, etc.
Dr. Ambedkar had many siblings and a large family. Dr. Ambedkar was the youngest child of the 14 children. His father was an Army Officer in the then British Indian Army. Dr. Ambedkar faced many difficulties from childhood, such as due to the caste system, untouchables, being from the Dalit community, being born in a poor-mediocre family, his mother died when he was just around 3 years old, etc. However, Dr. Ambedkar was fortunate to have been enrolled as the only untouchable student at a then prestigious school called Elphinstone High School in Mumbai at the age of 15 years.
Dr. Ambedkar was highly educated. He attended school at Elphinstone High School, as above, and went to the University of Bombay, Columbia University USA, LSE – London School of Economics. Dr. Ambedkar was also called a jurist, economist, a social reformer, etc.
At a time, Dr. Ambedkar considered converting to Sikhism. He later converted to Buddhism. In fact, Dr. Ambedkar had even started a Dalit Buddhist Movement.
