Though a Kumbh Mela is observed every 3 years in one of the 4 locations rotationally, there are 5 types of Kumbh Melas. The date of each of these different types of Kumbh Melas is determined as per the celestial bodies, the Sun, the Earth’s moon, and Jupiter placement status. Also, the selection of venue between the 4 locations is determined as per this. The 4 locations are Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik.
According to ancient mythology, the 4 locations were the places where the 4 drops of immortal nectar spilled or fell in the rivers adjacent to these 4 places from the Amrit, immortal nectar, in the pot Kumbh.
The Jupiter takes 12 years to transit, to go through all of the 12 zodiac signs. Therefore, the main Maha Kumbh Mela happens after 12 years x 12 = 144 years; after 12 Purna Kumbh Melas. However, the normal Kumbh Mela happens every 3 years in any one of the 4 locations. Ardha Kumbh Mela happens in Haridwar or Prayag every 6 years, Purna Kumbh Mela happens every 12 years, and the Maha Kumbh Mela happens every 144 years, as mentioned in the line before this.
The following are the basis times on the selection of the 4 locations for Kumbh Mela:
3. Nasik: Kumbh Mela is held in Nasik when Jupiter enters the 5th sign Leo, and the Sun and the Earth’s moon in the 4th sign Cancer
4. Ujjain: Kumbh Mela is held here when Jupiter is in the 5th sign Leo and the Sun is in the 1st sign Aries
A few Mantras are -
For Lord Brihaspati - Jupiter – Om Guruvaye Namah ॐ गुरुवे नम:
Lord Surya-Sun – Om Suryaaye Namah ॐ सूयार्य नमः
Lord Chandra-moon — Om Chandraaye Namah ऊँ चन्द्राय नमः
