Gita Jayanti is a holy Hindu annual celebration, an event. Gita refers to the Hindu holy, sacred book, the Bhagvad Gita. Jayanti refers to the ocassion, celebration or observance of birthday or anniversary. Gita Jayanti is celebrated as the birthday of the holy ancient Srimad Bhagvad Gita.
The date of Gita Jayanti each year is observed according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Gita Jayanti falls on the Ekadashi, the 11th day, of the Shukla Paksha phase of the moon, in the Hindu calendar month of Margashirsha. Shukla Paksha is the rising-waxing phase of the moon in the fortnight of the month. This time corresponds to Gregorian December-January period.
Along with the birthday celebration, it is said that Lord Krishna conveyed an immortal message, teachings of Karma and Dharma to Prince Arjuna in Kurushetra on the day, during the epic Mahabharata. Also that Charioteer and Advisor Sanjaya narrated this exchange of dialogues between Prince Arjuna and Lord Krishna, to the blinded by eyes King Dhritarashtra. Kurukshetra, a present day city in north India, has a great historical importance and significance in Hinduism. It is also sometimes referred to as the Land of the holy Bhagvad Gita.
The holy Bhagvad Gita is the ancient texts and scriptures in the Sanskrit language. The content includes various facets like philosophy, spirituality, mind peace, dialogues, politics, tactics, wisdom, right decision making, practical-real life values, better life living, quotes etc. Bhagvad Gita is part of the epic Mahabharata.
On the day of Gita Jayanti, many natives read parts of the Bhagvad Gita. Many perform prayers, Puja, and distribute food or sweets. Many keep the Ekadashi Vrat, fasts on this day. Some visit temples particularly those of Lord Krishna, like ISKCON temples, but also Lord Vishnu temples. Lord Krishna is said to be the 8th avatar-incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Some visit Kurukshetra. Many sing songs or play chanting music, Bhajans etc. There is also a fate in Kurukshetra. There are speeches.
