DhanTeras, 5 November 2018

DhanTeras, the Festival of Wealth, is a sacred Hindu festival. Dhanteras always falls two days before Diwali, the Festival of Lights. In fact, Dhanteras signifies the beginning or the 1st day of celebration of among the top Indian festivals Diwali. ‘Dhan’ part of Dhanteras means wealth. ‘Teras’ part means 13 or the 13th. The day after Dhanteras is called ‘Chotti’ Diwali, Chotti means small or smaller.

Each year, the dates of Dhanteras and Diwali can vary corresponding to the Gregorian calendar. The date is determined according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Dhanteras always falls on the 13th lunar-moon day of the Krishna Paksha phase of the moon, in the Hindu month of Karthik. Krishna Paksha is the waning-decreasing phase of the moon in the fortnight. This time always corresponds to the Gregorian October-November period.

The festivity dates for 2018 are—

5th of November, Monday –    Dhanteras

6th of November, Tuesday –    Chotti Diwali

7th of November, Wednesday – Main Diwali celebration

8th of November, Thursday – Govardhan Puja

9th of November, Friday –       Bhai Dooj

In an ancient legend behind Dhanteras, it is about a 16-year old son of a King called Hima.  As per his horoscope, his death was predicted on the 4th day of his marriage, by a snake-bite. But by the devotion and vigil of his newly-wed wife, when the God of Death Yama arrived in the form of a snake, he was dazzled and blinded by the preparation of the shine-lighting of the wife’s jewelry-ornaments, gold-silver coins, etc, and the songs that played. To this, the incarnated snake went away, and the King’s son was saved.

On the day of Dhanteras, in the evening natives pray to deities Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber for prosperity, wealth gain, success, work growth, professional rise, promotion, wellbeing, etc. Lakshmi Puja is a major part of Dhanteras festivity.

On Dhanteras, the devotees wake up early, clean their homes and surroundings. Some decorate the area with Diyas-oil lamps, lights, flowers, Rangoli-colorful floor artwork, footprints that represent Goddess Lakshmi footsteps, etc. Many fresh paint their homes and act upon any home repair work. Many buy silver, gold, steel utensils, etc.

A Mantra for Goddess Lakshmi is—

 Om Hreem Shreem MahaLakshmaye Namah

ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं महालक्ष्मयै नमः
