Kumbha Sankranti means the Sun’s transit. On Kumbha Sankranti, the Sun makes a transit from the sign Capricorn to Aquarius. The 11th Hindu Rashi-sign Kumbha means Aquarius. The word Sankranti means the time of Sun’s transit from one sign to another. There are 12 Sun’s transits in a year, i.e., 12 Sankrantis. In Sankranti, the Sanskrit word San means good, and Kranti means change, proceeding or moving on.

The date of Kumbha Sankranti can vary every year, e.g. in the year 2021, it will fall on the 12th of February.  Kumbha Sankranti also generally means the time around the end of the winter season and beginning time of the Indian season Vasant.
