When and where is the Labor Day, May Day or the Workers’ Day celebrated?

The 1st of May every year marks the observance of Labor Day aka May Day and the Workers’ Day. May Day is synonymous with International Workers’ Day; through May Day in specific refers to a festivity, seasonal celebration and originally celebrated in fervor in the UK as a spring festival. Celebration of May Day also became prominent in other European countries like France, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, etc. It is also observed in the US and Canada and in many parts of the world, such as Russia, China, Korea, etc under the term ‘Labor Day’ or the ‘Workers’ Day’. In India, Labor Day is observed on the 1st of May every year.

Is there any difference between May Day, Labor Day or International Workers’ Day?

In modern times, the essence of May Day, Labor Day and the International Workers’ Day or simply Workers’ Day, is the same. It is just that the term is called and referred differently in different countries or regions. Many countries mark Labor Day on the 1st of May every year. In the US and Canada, Labor Day is observed on the 1st Monday of the month of September. In Australia, Labor Day is a celebrated region or State/territory wise with different dates. Many countries observe Labor Day as a national or public holiday.

What does Labor Day mean in India?

In India, Labor Day, 1st of May is a public holiday. Labor Day is also called Shramik Diwas in India. In India, the origin of Labor Day can be traced back to 1923 and is said to have started in Chennai, earlier called Madras. This Labor Day was organized by the Labor Kisan Party, and red flag was also used. In the modern-day, Google Doodle also places a doodle on the occasion of the Labor Day. In India, child labor also became a concern at a time. Child labor, under the laws of India strictly prohibits underage children to work, and the act is called the Child Labor Act of 1986. For example, children below the age of 18 years forced to work is a crime, and is punishable, especially in places like mines.

Why is Labor Day observed?

May Day is celebrated for many reasons, such as to mark the rights of labor, institutions and factory workers, staff, tradesmen, etc. It is called for to have an 8-hour work day. Better work conditions are sought for. Labor Day serves as the reminder for ethics, safe work environment, and appropriate work conditions, etc for the working classes.
