Guru Ravidas was one of the prominent poet-Saints, Sages, socio-cultural reformer, devotional song writer in the medieval India. Guru Ravidas Ji lived in the part 15th and 16th centuries. He is said and estimated to have lived between 1450AD to 1520AD, i.e., for 70 years. However, through sources, his birth is traced to 1377 or 1398. He lived in about the same time as Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Ravidas Jayanti is regarded and celebrated as his birthday. He was born near the holy city of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, India. Guru Ravidas Jayanti is not a public holiday in India, but a restricted holiday. However, some natives in Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana may take leave on the occasion of Ravidas Jayanti.

The Gregorian date of Guru Ravidas Jayanti can vary every year. The date is determined as per the Hindu -Sikh calendar. It falls on the full moon in the calendar month of Magh that is called Magha Purnima; therefore the date may vary every year. In 2018, it was on the 31st of January. The 19th of February 2019 will mark the 642nd birthday celebration of Guru Ravidas Ji, taking his birth year as 1377AD.

Guru Ravidas Ji was from a poor family. His father was a cobbler. With his interest in spirituality, life learning, texts, poetry etc from an early age, he became a revered Guru over time, especially among many Sikhs. It is believed that Guru Ravidas Ji also came in contact with Guru Nanak Ji. Renowned poet Meera Bai is also said to have regarded and honored Guru Ravidas Ji.

Many of the ideologies, writings etc of Guru Ravidas Ji are written in the Sikhs’ holy book Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Ravidas Ji is believed to have travelled extensively in those times, across India and also overseas. He believed in Karma. He was against the caste system, where he himself was also a victim of. Guru Ravidas Ji was also popular for the Bhakti Movement.

After a fight that broke in Vienna, Austria in a certain Sikh community, where Ramanand Das Ji was murdered in 2009, some followers created a new religion Ravidasia.
