Remembrance on Mahavir Jayanti, 17 April 2019

Lord Mahavir, also spelled Mahaveer and Mahavira, was an enlightened soul, and a spiritual teacher, in Jainism religion. Lord Mahavir is regarded as the last sage in Jainism. Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir. Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated once every year.

The date of Mahavir Jayanti may vary every year. The date of Mahavir Jayanti is determined as per the Hindu-Jain calendar. Mahavir Jayanti date falls on the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha, the rising-waxing phase of the moon, in the Hindu month of Chaitra. This falls in the Gregorian calendar end of March to the beginning of April.

Lord Mahavir is believed to be born in the 6th century BC. He was born in a royal family. Lord Mahavir was born in the land that is now the Indian state of Bihar. Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most important festivals of Jains.

Lord Mahavir’s father was King Siddhartha and mother was Queen Trishala. His wife was Yashoda. He had a daughter named Priyadarshana. He left all his comforts, home, princely status at a young age. He left in pursuit of supreme spirituality, intense meditation, seeking Moksha, penance, etc. Lord Mahavir believed in simple living.

Lord Mahavir regarded and preached men and women as equals. He discouraged blind material possessions, selfishness, anger, greed, etc. He supported non-violence, truth, faith, reverence etc. He encouraged achievement through strength, willpower, hard work.

The day of Mahavir Jayanti is not only in celebration of his birth anniversary but also in dedication and devotion to him. Many natives observe prayers. Some observe fasting. Many visit Jain temples. Though in many parts of India, especially in the private sector, do not observe Mahavir Jayanti as a full day holiday, it is celebrated with enthusiasm especially in Bihar and some parts of West Bengal.  Many Government and local authority offices remain closed.

We commemorate and pay our tributes to Lord Mahavir and his great noble path of life on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.
