Importance of Sakat Chauth, 24 January 2019

Sakat Chauth is a day-long important Hindu holy event. Sakat Chauth is also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, Ganesh Chauth, and Tilkut Chauth. Sakat refers to Goddess Sakat. Sankashti means deliverance from difficulties, sorrows, hurdles or the troubled times. Chauth or Chaturthi means fourth and in this context, the 4th day. Tila means sesame. The Chaturthi that falls in the month of Magha is sometimes specifically called Sakat Chauth.

Sakat Chauth in 2019 is falling on the 24th of January 2019. The date is determined according to the Hindu calendar, on the basis of the lunar-moon cycle. As above, Sakat Chauth is observed on the 4th day, Tithi, in the Krishna Paksha moon phase of the fortnight, in the Hindu calendar month of Magha. Krishna Paksha is the decreasing-waning moon phase. Magha corresponds to part period in-between Gregorian January-February period.

Lord Ganesha is one of the most popular and worshiped Gods. Lord Ganesha is one of the two sons of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesha’s brother is Lord Kartikeya, the God of War.

Lord Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and represents intellect, knowledge, and wisdom. Lord Ganesha also marks auspiciousness in the new beginnings. Lord Ganesha enables success, prosperity, wellness, good health, good fortune etc. The planet Mercury is often associated with Lord Ganesha. Planet Mercury is the planet for wisdom, mind, communication, and intellect.

On Sakat Chauth many Lord Ganesha devotees observe Vrat, fasting, and offer prayers, in dedication to Lord Ganesha. Many women keep the Vrat, fast, on Sakat Chauth for the wellbeing of their children, families, to come out of any problems, obstacles etc. Some women perform prayers to have children, for having the happiness of a child.
