Shaheed Diwas, also known as the Sarvodaya Day, is India’s main Martyrs’ Day. It is honored and observed every year on the 30th of January. The date of 30th January was selected as the Martyrs’ Day in India, as the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi Ji was assassinated on the 30th of January 1948. Through the year, there are 5 Martyrs’ Days observed in India.
On the 30th January Martyrs’ Day, we not only remember and honor Mahatma Gandhi Ji, and condemn his assassination on the 30th of January by Nathuram Godse, but also freedom fighters, all those who sacrificed their lives, risked all, and contributed in the struggle of India’s Independence against the invasive British Rule.
Shaheed Diwas is also called Sarvodaya Day, as Sarvodaya refers to the Gandhian Philosophy of Sarvodaya; also the Sarvodaya Movement. In the Sanskrit word-term Sarvodaya, ‘Sarva’ means each, every or universal; and ‘Sarvodaya’ means progress or upliftment of all or universal upliftment.
On the day every year on the 30th of January, the President of India, Prime Minister, Vice President, the Defense Minister, and the 3 Chiefs of Army-Air Force-Navy pay tribute and lay flowers-wreaths at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi Ji’s Raj Ghat Memorial in New Delhi.
