India, from the ancient times, has always been known for and had one of the bravest, chivalrous, courageous warriors, patriotic leaders etc in the world. They have not only fought to protect their land from invaders, attackers, foreign intruders etc into the Indian peninsula or their regional territory but also have kept India’s ancient culture, heritage, values, traditions, scriptures etc alive. One such great Indian son, who lived in the 20th century, in medieval India, was a Maratha Emperor-Ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj aka Shivaji Bhonsle.
The Gregorian date 19th of February, every year, marks the celebration of Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary, called Shivaji Jayanti. Shivaji was born on the 19th of February 1630, in the famous Shivneri Fort, near current day city Pune, in Maharashtra.
Shivaji Jayanti is basically observed in the Indian State of Maharashtra and mostly among the Marathas. Shivaji Jayanti is not a national holiday, but some institutes, Government organizations in Maharashtra, Goa, and parts of Karnataka mark a celebration with shows, dramas, speeches, processions or parades etc.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, born in Maharashtra India, as above, mainly fought against the Mughal invaders. Shivaji won many battles. Shivaji Maharaj was a born leader and was active from an early age of 16. Shivaji Maharaj is also known to have seized the Toma Fort starting at a young age 16.
The Mumbai airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, BOM, is named after the Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Beside other celebrations, on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti, some natives dress up in the traditional dress attire similar to that of Shivaji Maharaj.
