Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, birth name Gadadhar Chattopadhyay, was one of the prominent Sages, Saints in India. Shri Ramakrishna lived in the 19th century, from 1836 to 1886, 50 years. The founder of the famous Ramakrishna Math, Swami Vivekananda, was one of the famous followers-devotee of Shri Ramakrishna. In fact, as the name indicates, Swami Vivekananda named the Ramakrishna Mission after his Guru Shri Ramakrishna.

It is believed that before the death of Shri Ramakrishna, he had transferred his spiritual powers to Swami Vivekananda. Yogi Maharaj Totapuri was the spiritual Guru of Shri Ramakrishna.

The 8th of March 2019 marks the 183rd birthday of the noble Guru Shri Ramakrishna. The event is called Shri Ramakrishna Jayanti. However, each year, the date of celebration of Shri Ramakrishna Jayanti may vary. The date each year is determined as per the Hindu calendar. According to the Hindu calendar, the birth of Shri Ramakrishna took place in Dwitiya, Tithi, in the Hindu month of Phalguna, in the Shukla Paksha phase of the moon in that month. Dwitiya means the 2nd day of the moon phase. Shukla Paksha is the waxing-rising phase of the moon. In the Gregorian year 1836, this related to the Gregorian date on the 18th of February.

Shri Ramakrishna was born in a very poor family. He was born in a Brahmin family. He was born in a village called Kamarpukur, in West Bengal. Kamarpukur is roughly 100 km or 62 miles from Kolkata. Shri Ramakrishna was into spirituality, religious followings, and practices from a young age. In his life, he was well versed with the Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata etc.

Shri Ramakrishna’s family got him married at a very early age. There was a big age gap between him and his spouse Ms. Sarada Devi. She also became a Sannyasi as she grew up. She was also a follower of Shri Ramakrishna. He respected and regarded her as a divine person.

In continuance and in the modern-day, programs, events are organized to mark the celebration of Shri Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna Mission is also known to organize special events each year.
