Significance of Lunar Eclipse, Chandra Grahan of the 21st January 2019

The 21st of January 2019 will mark the first lunar eclipse of 2019. The moon will be in the infrequent super-moon status on this eclipse.  The moon will appear dark red or rust color, the event called super blood red moon, from Earth locations mentioned below. Each year, there are about 2 to 5 lunar eclipses.

A lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes in-between the Sun and the moon. The rays of the Sun falling on the moon are blocked by the Earth. In such a phenomenon, the moon becomes darkened.

There are only two lunar eclipses in 2019. The schedule of lunar eclipses occurring in 2019 is the 21st of January, Monday, and the 16th of July, Tuesday. The 21st January total lunar eclipse will be visible from North America, South America, some parts of Europe and upper left part of Africa. Total lunar eclipse means that entire moon will be covered by the Earth’s shadow.

In Astrology, a lunar eclipse can hold an important significance. It can have different effect on individual Earth natives. It can be positive, neutral or have no change, or can be negative. It varies from native to native, as each native has a unique date-time-place of birth, thereby a specific natal birth chart, Janam Kundli. However, since this lunar eclipse will not be visible in India, Nepal etc, the Hindu rituals or significance towards this lunar eclipse, Chandra Grahan, will not mostly be observed in this part of the world.

In Astrology, the moon is often regarded as the Queen of all the nine, NavGrah. In Astrology, the words associated with the moon are the mood, emotions, short journeys, land, property, mother, happiness, chest, lungs, heart etc. The moon rules the sign Cancer and House 4th.

After the Sun, the moon is often regarded as the 2nd most important of the nine astrology celestial bodies and Rahu-Ketu. Mondays are dedicated to Lord Chandra, the moon. Monday is called Somvaar in Hindi, dies Lunae in Latin, lunes in Spanish, Getsuyo in Japanese, al’iithnein in Arabic etc.

A Mantra for Lord Chandra, the moon is—

                        Om Chandraaye Namah

                        ॐ चन्द्राय नमः
