Skanda Sashti is a monthly one-day holy event. Generally, there are 12, monthly, Skanda Sashtis in a year. Skanda refers to the son of the supreme deities Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesha is Lord Skanda’s brother. The name Skanda is more popular in south India. In fact, the event Skanda Sashti is most popular among Tamil Hindus. Skanda is the same Lord as Lord Kartikeya aka Kartika, Murugan, Sharavana etc. Lord Kartikeya is called the God of War and Victory.

The Sanskrit word-number Sas means 6. Sashta or Sashti means 6th. The number six holds significance to Lord Kartikeya. Lord Kartikeya is believed to be cared for and raised by 6 mothers. The 6 sisters are also referred to the 3rd of the 27 Nakshatras, the Krittika Nakshatra. Krritika Nakashatra is often related to the Greek’s Pleiades; however, Pleiades means the cluster of 7 sister stars.

Sashti means the 6th day of each of the two phases of the moon in the month’s lunar fortnights. Skanda Sashti is observed on the 6th day, Tithi, of the Shukla Paksha moon phase.  Shukla Paksha is the waxing-rising moon phase. The day of Skanda Sashti is dedicated in devotion and worship to Lord Skanda.
