The 20th of March 2019 marks the auspicious holy event of Holika Dahan. Holika Dahan always falls one day before the main festival of colors, Holi. The date of Holika Dahan can vary every year. The date of Holika Dahan and Holi is determined according to the Hindi calendar. Holika Dahan falls on the full moon that falls in the Hindu calendar month of Phalguna. The Phalguna month always corresponds to between the February-March period, every Gregorian year.
The main celebration of Holika Dahan falls in the evening at dusk, i.e., the night before Holi, on the eve of Holi. It involves organizing bonfires, preparation of sweet items like Gujiyas, placing wheat sticks in the bonfire etc. Holika Dahan and Holi are celebrated in India and Nepal, but also among other communities in some countries, also as Holi has become a popular festival in many parts of the world.
In an epic, demoness Holika was burnt to death in a bonfire on this day. The narrative goes, that once there was a demon King Hiranyakashipu. He had over pride about himself. He wanted everyone to treat and worship him like a God. His son Prahlad however was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. This was inacceptable to Hiranyakashipu.
The demon King Hiranyakashipu tried very hard to make Prahlad stop worshiping Lord Vishnu, and instead to worship him. On failing, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika to burn Prahlad. Holika had the immortal boon not to get burnt by fire, therefore, she enticed and kept Prahlad in her lap and sat in burning fire, pyre. Prahlad started praying to Lord Vishnu at this instance. With the grace of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad got saved and Holika died. Later, the evil King Hiranyakashipu was also killed. Prahlad later went on to become a noble and liked King. Therefore, Holika Dahan marks, and is celebrated as the burning of female demon Holika, signifying the good over the evil.
We greet all natives on the occasion of Holika Dahan; and may the good win over the evil in the world. We take this opportunity to wish all natives a Very Happy Holi, and the pleasant spring season.
