What is the story behind Ekadashi Fasting?

Once there was a king named by Mahishmat of Champawati Nagar. He had five sons, elder son Lumbhak who was always occupied in bad deeds. Because of which King Mahishmat drove him out of the kingdom. After this Lumbhak went into the forest and in progress stealing. One day when he came to the city to steal at night, the soldiers caught him, but when he revealed himself to be the son of King Mahishmat, the soldiers left him. Then he returned to the forest and started eating the fruits of the trees. He lived under an old people. Once innocently, he fasted on the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Pausha month. At the same time Akashvani, Prince Lumbhak.

 With the consequence of Saphala Ekadashi fast, you will get an empire and a son. After Akashvani, the form of Lumbhak became heavenly. Since then, his good intelligence was immersed in the chant of Lord Vishnu. He manage successfully for fifteen years. He had a son named Manojna. When he grew up, Lumbhak handed over the kingdom to his son, and he himself was in dedication to Lord Krishna. In the end, he achieved Vishnulok with the effect of fasting of Saphala Ekadashi.

What is the significane of Saphala Ekadashi?

In older days Ekadashi fasting is recommended on two consecutive days. It is suggested that Smartha with family should observe fasting on 1st day only. The alternating Ekadashi fasting, which is the 2nd one, is recommended for Sanyasis, widows and for those who craves for Moksha. When alternating Ekadashi fasting is recommended for Smartha it corresponds with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.
